丂丂丂This seminar will highlight the special features of marsupial reproduction as well as prenatal and postnatal development. The unique mode of reproduction, and the long period of development while the pouch young is attached to a teat in the mother's pouch makes them valuable models for understanding the evolution of placentation, early embryonic development and the control of organogenesis including sexual differentiation. They have been evolving separately since marsupial and eutherian mammals diverged over 120 million years ago, yet they are mammals in every way, so making them a valuable counterpoint for comparative genomics of mouse and man. |
