The motor features of Parkinson’s disease have been attributed in part to the reduction of dopamine in the basal ganglia. These features are the result of a complex neuronal disorder at different levels of the SNC, such as changes in the neuronal excitability, synchronized oscillatory activity, and abnormal sensory responses of areas of the cerebral cortex that are involved in planning and execution of movement, as well as executive, limbic and sensory functions. The adequately characterization of these changes will increase our understanding of both normal and pathological neuronal activity, and will help to develop more specific and effective treatments for parkinsonian patients.
